Hot Shots

What is Hot Shots?

SET Academy provides World Class Tennis Coaching including the delivery of ANZ Tennis Hot Shots on a daily basis. Our coaches are proven and certified trainers of the program.

Hot shots tennis uses modified equipment scaled to the child’s age and needs to learn to play tennis. Scaled equipment modified to the physiology of kids includes: three different levels of low compression balls (red, orange and green balls), smaller nets, shorter racquets and three modified court dimensions (1/4, 1/2 and full court) which make the game easier and more fun to play.

Launch PadBlue Ball (Ages 3-5)

The Launch Pad stage introduces children to tennis through games and fun activities. Children learn the basics of tennis including how to rally. This stage really helps children develop their fundamental motor skills; throw, run, catch, jump and most importantly, tracking. This is a great way for kids to start tennis and have fun.

Court size: variable
Tennis ball: red ball (25% compression)
Recommended racquet size: 19–23 inches

Red StageRed Ball (Ages 5–8)

The Red stage is for beginners. The red ball is larger than a yellow ball and doesn’t bounce as high (just 25 per cent compression), making it a breeze for even the youngest players to hit it comfortably. The courts and nets used in the Red stage are much smaller and easier for kids to move around.

Court size: 3 m × 8.23 or 6 m × 10.97 m
Tennis ball: red ball (25 per cent compression)
Recommended racquet size: 21–23 inches

Orange StageOrange Ball (Ages 8–10)

After mastering the Red stage, children move on to the Orange stage where the ball bounces a little higher (50 per cent compression) and the court is a bit bigger.

Court size: 6.4 m × 18.29 m
Tennis ball: orange ball (50 per cent compression)
Recommended racquet size: 23–25 inches

> Learn about the orange ball and tennis court

Green StageGreen Ball (Ages 9+)

The ball used in the Green stage has a higher compression (75 per cent of a yellow tennis ball) and children play on a full-size court.

Court size: 10.97 m × 23.78 m (full court)
Tennis ball: green ball (75 per cent compression)
Recommended racquet size: 25–27 inches

What is a low-compression ball?

Red, orange and green low-compression balls don’t bounce as high as a yellow ball, making them easier for children to hit. Watch these animations to find out why the red, orange and green balls are perfect for developing players.

Smaller courts

The courts are smaller too, which makes them easier for kids to play on. It also helps them develop realistic footwork patterns and encourages them to use all parts of the court.

Smaller nets

small-netPortable nets, which are used during the Red Stage on the red courts, come in sizes of 3 and 6 metres.

During the Orange and Green stages, the standard net is used, but it can be lowered depending on the players’ ability.

Choosing the correct size racquet for your child

racquetsPicking the right tennis racquet is crucial – if it’s too heavy or the wrong size the child will have trouble swinging the racquet and it could lead to injury. Your child should be able to hold the racquet comfortably when their arm is extended and be able to swing the racquet easily.

Also, make sure the grip is the right size for your child. Your child should be able to hold the racquet comfortably – if the grip is too big or too small, children will grip the racquet tighter. This can lead to injury and inhibit children from developing a fluent technique.

If in doubt, please ask one of our friendly coaches to assist you. Tennis racquets can be purchased at our pro shop located inside the Dingley Tennis Club.
